A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
