British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
